Raspberry Pi refers to a series of very low cost, single board computers that were first introduced in 2012. The devices were developed in the UK with the idea of promoting basic computer science in educational settings and in non-developed countries. The Raspberry Pi Foundation (https://www.raspberrypi.org) is the drive behind the development along with Broadcom. In 2021, the most current model (Pi 4B) is a 1.2 GHz 64 bit quad core processor that has all the needed I/Os, like HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, Wifi and LAN.
The Amateur Radio world has been a huge supporter of Raspberry Pi’s because all of the programs are based on the Linux language and most of the software is open code. With a Raspberry Pi you can run many popular radio programs like WSJT-X, FLDIGI, Winlink, and APRS.
In addition, there are many accessory programs like Network Drives, Printer Hubs, Hamclock and DVSwitch that will make your shack even more flexible.
Raspberry Pi components and kits are available from several places including Amazon. A typical basic starter kit for the Pi 4B can be found at https://smile.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry-4GB-Basic-Kit/dp/B07TYK4RL8/
You will still need a Micro SD card along with a case for the unit. It’s a fun device and simple to learn.
