FUSION-Wires-X Forum

Currently, there are 4 Fusion repeaters in Lee County:

444.675  Lee County EOC-analog and digital

444.750  Bonita Beach-analog and digital

146.790  Sanibel Island-analog and digital

442.250 East Fort Myers near the EOC – analog and digital

The only ones that are Wires-X (internet) connected at this time are the 442.450 and the 444.750. Local volunteers host the nodes free of charge to FMARC. Normally the two are connected to the 21805 Wires X room, giving us county-wide Fusion coverage.

I want to point out that this isn’t set in stone. We welcome you to connect the node to other Wires-X nodes and rooms, we just ask that when you are finished, you reconnect the node back to the 21805 room.

We do discourage you from connecting with foreign language nodes/rooms for long periods of time. Likewise, if you have out of town ham friends that want to connect their nodes up, they are welcome to connect to the 21805 room.

It is better that they connect to that room than connect to one of the individual nodes.

A few tips about using Fusion, and internet linked repeaters. First and foremost…take a breath! Remember that it takes a few milliseconds for all the infrastructure to do its thing, so after you press the PTT, take a breath before you start speaking.

Repeater etiquette still is necessary, even more so when you’re on several connected repeaters. “Kerchunking” (keying to listen for the squelch tail, and not identifying) a fusion repeater is fruitless, as the digital repeaters do not have squelch tails. Doing this DOES display your call sign on the radios of other users.

There are a couple of other hams that have local Wires-X nodes, but they aren’t connected to repeaters, so their range is limited. There are also a couple of other Wires-X connected repeaters in adjoining counties that have working coverage in Lee County.

Nomenclature:

The only way you can connect to a ROOM , is via a NODE . Eg, one of the Wires X repeaters, or a private wires-X node. A ROOM is a virtual presence which will accept multiple connections. A NODE represents an actual piece of hardware, and can only be connected to one other entity, either NODE or ROOM.

When you push the Red DX button, all you are doing is putting your radio in “Control Mode” which simply makes it easier to control the node to which you are connected, such as room/node search and connect/disconnect functions. As far as the RF connection, nothing changes, so if the node is connected where you want it, you don’t have to do anything but push the button to talk and let up to listen. The ONLY thing you need to use the red button for is to use the “Search” functions, and to make it a little easier to connect and disconnect.

Finally, I invite you to join our Fusion net on Wednesday evenings at (or around) 8:00pm on the 3 linked repeaters.

Again, the take home message:  We welcome you to connect the node to other Wires-X nodes and rooms, we just ask that when you are finished, you reconnect the node back to the 21805 room.

Enjoy Fusion and the Wires-X nodes! We’ll catch you on the local repeaters.
